Precious Plastic Noosa

Welcome to Noosa's Circular Economy Community Project

Precious Plastic Noosa is a transformative approach to recycling, empowering our community to repurpose plastic bottle caps into new products.

Our pilot project involves a partnership with Plastic Free Noosa and Sunshine Beach State High School, with the initiative aiming to embed circular economy principles into education & community practice. Visitors will get the chance to learn about the program and take a 'Made in Noosa' recycled plastic keepsake home with them after their stay which will be available to purchase at the Visitor Information Centre on Hastings Street.

Noosa exemplifies the ethos of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve it is, embracing innovation and environmental stewardship. Moreover, this endeavor aligns with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 12, promoting sustainable consumption and production.

Ultimately, the program aims to cultivate a generation of environmental leaders, fostering a resilient and equitable global economy.

THE UNFORTUNATE TRUTH ABOUT PLASTIC

One million tonnes of Australia’s annual plastic consumption is single-use, with 84% of plastic sent to landfill & only 13% recycled.

Every year in Australia, approximately 130,000 tonnes of plastic leaks into the marine environment.

By 2050 it is estimated that the plastic in the oceans will outweigh fish.

Many of Australia's recycling facilities are not set up to handle bottle caps, meaning they often end up in landfill.

Recycling guide: Not all bottle caps are created equal!

As part of our plastics education within the school program we do currently accept most types of lids, however we are only able to use those labelled 2 or 4 to create new products.

HDPE 2 (High Density Polyethylene) - Common lid types include Soft Drink lids (eg. Coca Cola products) and Tetra pack lids (eg. Long life milk).

LDPE 4 (Low Density Polyethylene) - Common lid types include Plastic Milk Bottle lids, 1 & 2L Orange & Apple Juice lids.

To learn more about the different types of plastic and their common uses here.

Please follow these guidelines to avoid recycling contamination;

  • Only provide us bottle caps that are 100% clean and dry
  • Remove any foam or silicone inserts
  • No ‘Pop-Top’ lids
  • No bigger than a milk lid in size

In the face of global environmental challenges, Noosa's Precious Plastic Pilot Program offers a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of local action in shaping a more sustainable future for generations to come.
